Tell WestJet that Respect, Fair Pay, and Working Conditions shouldn’t be UltraExtraBasic.
What is UltraExtraBasic?
UltraExtraBasic is a new public campaign from the WestJet Component (CUPE Local 8125), representing flight attendants at WestJet and WestJet Encore.
It’s a playful twist on WestJet’s Ultra Basic fare — but with a serious message.
Our campaign shines a light on the growing problem of unpaid work, declining working conditions, and a lack of respect for the flight attendants who keep WestJet flying safely and smoothly every day.
WestJet built its reputation on humour, heart, and people-first service. We’re reclaiming that spirit to remind management and the travelling public that fair pay and respect are not “extras.” They’re the basics every worker deserves.
Why We’re Launching this Campaign
Across Canada’s airline industry, flight attendants are performing an average of 35 hours of unpaid work every month — time spent boarding passengers, waiting through delays, and carrying out essential safety duties.
Despite more than two years of discussion, WestJet has failed to address this problem or compensate its crews fairly.
Many WestJet flight attendants now earn less than minimum wage once unpaid time is included.
That’s not just unfair, it undermines crew morale, and the guest experience that once defined the WestJetter spirit.
We’ve seen other CUPE airline divisions, like the Air Canada Component’s “Unfair Canada” campaign, mobilize massive public support and push their employers to act. It works — and now it’s our turn.
