Welcome to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) page. Here, you will find valuable information and resources designed to promote the health, safety, and well-being of our cabin crew. We are committed to ensuring a safe working environment and empowering our members with the tools and knowledge they need to stay informed and secure while performing their duties.

Role of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Committee

The OHS Committee is integral to ensuring the health and safety of workers in the workplace, operating under federal legislation mandated by law.

  • Monthly Meetings: Participate in monthly OHS meetings to discuss ongoing business, review all reported injuries and hazards, and maintain compliance with meeting minute documentation.

  • Hazard Identification: The committee is tasked with identifying potential workplace hazards and risks, collaborating with the employer to implement effective mitigation strategies.

  • Safety Recommendations: The committee makes strategic recommendations to enhance workplace health and safety, suggesting modifications to processes, equipment, and practices to address identified risks and prevent accidents or injuries.

  • Incident Investigation: Conduct thorough investigations of near misses, accidents, and injuries within the workplace to identify causal factors and prevent recurrence.

  • Workplace Inspections: Perform annual inspections of all aircraft and physical workplaces, ensuring comprehensive assessments of safety conditions.

  • Hazard Reporting Culture: Foster a robust hazard reporting culture, emphasizing that the employer can only address issues that have been formally reported.

  • Legislative Compliance: Work collaboratively to ensure that all legislative requirements are upheld and implemented across the organization.

  • Liaison with Executive Board: Communicate and coordinate with the Executive Board regarding matters affecting occupational health and safety.

Joint Health and Safety Committees

There are two types of joint health and safety committees mandated by law for large federally regulated companies like ours. The Union conducts elections to fill positions on the workplace committee in each base, ensuring that all potential hazards are documented. The Policy Committee representatives are appointed by the Executive Board. These committees work alongside management representatives appointed by the company to address OHS issues affecting the workplace.

The Policy Health and Safety Committees (PC) addresses hazards, policies, programs, and other factors affecting the health and safety of employees on a system-wide level. Long-lasting items on the Workplace Committee agenda may be advanced to the Policy Committee for further consideration and action.

The Workplace Health and Safety Committees (WPC) addresses hazards and workplace injuries or illnesses occurring at the worksite level. The WPC plays a crucial role in handling refusals of dangerous work and facilitating internal complaint resolution.
